Last week, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were on top of the college football world after defeating the then-#20 Texas A&M Aggies on the road. However, in just one week, Notre Dame has suffered a stunning loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies.
Northern Illinois’ last possession resulted in a 4th and 2 predicament on Notre Dame’s 31-yard line. They declined a 49-yard field goal and instead sought to convert on fourth down. The bet paid off, as Northern Illinois scored a 35-yard field goal with 31 seconds left.
The Fighting Irish tried to respond with a field goal of their own. Notre Dame tried a 62-yard field goal with five seconds left. However, it was blocked, and Northern Illinois began to celebrate after stunning the Fighting Irish in South Bend.
Believe it or not, Notre Dame’s shocking loss may not be the end of their playoff hopes just yet. The Fighting Irish still have a terrific road win against Texas A&M on their record. If they can win all of their remaining games, they have a chance to make the playoffs.
Notre Dame’s schedule is pretty friendly going ahead. Here’s a listing of their remaining games:
At Purdue
against Miami (OH)
Against. #22 Louisville
vs Stanford.
Georgia Tech is ranked number 23.
At Navy
vs Florida State.
vs Virginia.
At Navy
at No. 13 USC
Georgia Tech is likely to slip out of the rankings following its defeat to Syracuse earlier today. Still, Notre Dame has a potential to make a few statement wins over clubs like Louisville and USC in the future. However, there is little doubt that this upset is a significant setback for their playoff aspirations.
