In a surprising turn of events, Jim Larrañaga, the legendary head coach who transformed Miami Hurricanes basketball into a national contender, has officially announced his departure from the team. Larrañaga, who has been at the helm for over a decade, confirmed that he has decided to terminate his contract, ending his tenure with the Hurricanes.

Larrañaga, 74, has been a monumental figure in Miami’s basketball program. Taking over in 2011, he not only revitalized the Hurricanes but also led them to unprecedented success. Under his leadership, Miami reached the NCAA Tournament multiple times, including memorable Elite Eight and Final Four appearances. His guidance and commitment turned the Hurricanes into a formidable team in the ACC, capable of competing against powerhouse programs.

In his statement, Larrañaga expressed gratitude for his time at Miami and the

support from fans, players, and the university. “It has been a privilege to lead

this program and work with such talented student-athletes,” he said. “The

University of Miami will always hold a special place in my heart.”

University of Miami Athletic Director Dan Radakovich acknowledged Larrañaga’s contributions and impact.

“Coach Larrañaga elevated our basketball program to levels we had

never seen before. His leadership, mentorship, and commitment to

excellence have left an indelible mark on our program, and he will always be a

part of the Miami Hurricanes family,” Radakovich stated.

Larrañaga’s departure marks the end of an era, and the Miami Hurricanes now face the challenge of finding a successor

who can continue the legacy he built. His contributions to the program and college

basketball as a whole will be remembered for years to come.
