In a significant development for Rutgers football, head coach Greg Schiano has announced that defensive end Wesley Bailey will enter the transfer portal, signaling his departure from the program. Bailey, who has been a pivotal part of the Scarlet Knights’ defense, played in four games this season before redshirting due to injury. Over his career at Rutgers, he accumulated 64 total tackles and 9.5 sacks, showcasing his impact on the field.
Bailey’s decision to transfer comes as Coach Schiano plans to restructure the team’s roster. During a press conference on December 8, 2024, Schiano acknowledged the challenges faced this season, including significant injuries that required the team to adapt continually. He specifically mentioned the loss of key defensive players, stating, “We lost our leading sacker, Wesley Bailey, from the previous two years.”
The departures are part of Schiano’s broader strategy to revitalize the team following a season marked by adversity. Despite these challenges, the Scarlet Knights secured a 7-5 record and earned a spot in the upcoming Rate Bowl against Kansas State. Schiano expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the valuable experience gained by younger players stepping into pivotal roles. He stated, “I think our young players now have gained valuable experience and are going to do a good job.”
As the transfer portal officially opens, Rutgers anticipates further roster changes, with players seeking new opportunities and the coaching staff actively recruiting to fill key positions. Schiano remains focused on preparing the team for the Rate Bowl on December 26, 2024, and is committed to building a resilient squad for the upcoming season.
