In June 2017, forward Luke Maye was involved in a serious car accident where his vehicle flipped multiple times after colliding with an 18-wheeler. Remarkably, Maye emerged uninjured and even attended his younger brother’s middle-school graduation later that evening.
**Brandon Robinson’s Car Accident (2020)**
In January 2020, senior guard Brandon Robinson was involved in a two-car accident in Carrboro, North Carolina. Robinson was not seriously injured and was not issued any citation. The driver of the other vehicle was charged with impaired driving. Although not seriously injured, it was uncertain when Robinson would be cleared to practice or play following the incident.
**Justin Coleman’s Journey (2015)**
Justin Coleman, a walk-on player for the Tar Heels, overcame significant adversity after suffering a broken neck during a high school game in 2010. Defying the odds, he recovered and eventually earned a spot on UNC’s varsity team. His resilience and determination have been inspirational to many.
**George Hill Jr.’s Fatal Accident (2023)**
Tragically, in July 2023, UNC junior varsity basketball player George Hill Jr. was killed in a car accident at the intersection of N.C. 54 Highway and N.C. Highway 751. Hill, a promising student and athlete, was remembered for his dedication and aspirations, including plans to attend medical school.
These incidents highlight the unpredictable challenges faced by athletes and underscore the importance of support systems within collegiate sports programs. The UNC basketball community has shown resilience in the face of adversity, honoring the memories of those lost and supporting the recovery of those injured.
