The UCF Knights community is mourning the loss of two former football players, Otis Anderson Jr. and Mike Merritt, who tragically passed away in separate incidents.
**Otis Anderson Jr.**
On November 29, 2021, former UCF running back Otis Anderson Jr. was fatally shot at his parents’ home in Jacksonville, Florida. His father, Otis Anderson Sr., was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection with the incident. According to reports, an argument between Anderson Jr. and his father escalated, leading to the tragic shooting. Anderson Jr., affectionately known as “Juice,” played for UCF from 2017 to 2020, amassing over 2,000 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns during his collegiate career. He was remembered by his coaches and teammates for his uplifting personality and significant contributions to the team.
**Mike Merritt**
On December 17, 2022, former UCF tight end Mike Merritt, 38, was killed in a
head-on collision on State Road 417 near Orlando, Florida. Merritt was driving
southbound in the northbound lanes when his vehicle collided with another
car. He was transported to AdventHealth East Hospital, where he was pronounced
deceased. Merritt played for the UCF Golden Knights from 2005 to 2007 and
was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Former teammates remembered him as a beloved friend and father, noting the
positive impact he had on those around him.
The UCF community has expressed profound grief over the loss of these two
individuals, both of whom left lasting impressions on and off the field. Their
untimely deaths serve as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the
deep bonds formed through collegiate athletics.
