Kansas University Declines Agreement to Hire Oregon’s Matt Ulmer as Volleyball Coach

Lawrence, KS—Kansas University (KU) has officially announced that it will not move forward with an agreement to hire Matt Ulmer, the current head volleyball coach at the University of Oregon, as its next volleyball coach. Despite extensive discussions, the negotiations ultimately fell through, leaving KU’s search for a new head coach unresolved.

Ulmer, widely regarded as one of the premier coaches in collegiate volleyball, has made significant strides with the Oregon Ducks since taking over as head coach in 2017. Under his leadership, the Ducks achieved multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four run in 2018. Known for his player-focused approach and ability to develop talent, Ulmer was considered a strong candidate to elevate the Jayhawks’ program, which has faced challenges in recent seasons.

KU Athletic Director Travis Goff issued a statement on Friday confirming the decision. “After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation process, we have decided not to proceed with an agreement to hire Matt Ulmer as our next volleyball coach. We appreciate Coach Ulmer’s time and interest in our program but believe this decision aligns with our long-term vision for Kansas Volleyball.”

While KU did not elaborate on the specifics behind the decision, sources close to the situation suggest that differences in contract terms and program expectations may have played a role. Ulmer’s reported demands for enhanced facilities and increased recruiting budgets could not be fully aligned with KU’s current resources and strategic plans.

The decision comes at a critical time for the Jayhawks, who are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2024 season. The team finished near the bottom of the Big 12 standings, and former head coach Ray Bechard retired after 26 seasons, leaving a legacy of success that included a Final Four appearance in 2015. KU’s leadership now faces pressure to find a coach capable of building on that legacy while reinvigorating the program.

As for Ulmer, he remains a respected figure in the volleyball world and will continue to lead Oregon. The Ducks are coming off a strong season, further solidifying Ulmer’s reputation as a program builder and tactician.

KU has yet to announce its next steps in the search process but remains committed to finding a leader who can bring stability and success to the program. With the spring volleyball season approaching, the university’s timeline for hiring a new coach is growing increasingly urgent.
