In a significant move for the Brisbane Broncos, hooker Tyson Smoothy has secured his future with the club by signing a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025 season.
Smoothy’s journey with the Broncos began in 2023 when he joined on a train-and-trial basis. His dedication and performance quickly earned him a spot in the top 17, culminating in an appearance in the NRL Grand Final that year. Over the 2023 season, he made 13 appearances, primarily coming off the bench as the No.14, where his crisp passing and solid defense made him a valuable asset.
Standing at 181 cm and weighing 97 kg, the 25-year-old Toowoomba native has amassed 35 NRL appearances to date. His career began with the Melbourne Storm in 2021 before he seized the opportunity with the Broncos. Smoothy’s work ethic and team-first attitude have been instrumental in his rise within the team.
Broncos Coach Kevin Walters expressed his satisfaction with Smoothy’s commitment, stating, “Tyson made the most of his opportunity after joining us at the start of last preseason as a train-and-trial player, and all his hard work paid off as the year went on. He has a great attitude both on and off the field, knows what his role is, and really fits into the team and what it means to be a Bronco.”
Smoothy’s extension aligns with the club’s strategy to retain key talent, joining teammates like Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, and Reece Walsh, who are also contracted until at least the end of 2025.
Looking ahead, Smoothy has already planned his future beyond the Broncos. He has signed a three-year deal with Wakefield Trinity in the English Super League, set to commence in 2026. Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming chapter, Smoothy said, “My young family and I are really excited to begin a new chapter with Wakefield Trinity next season—we’ve heard great things about the club, and the fans in the English Super League.”
For now, Smoothy’s focus remains on contributing to the Broncos’ success in the upcoming seasons, aiming to build on the momentum from his impressive performances since joining the club.
