A young athlete from the Double R Youth Football team has been rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the field following suspected exposure to a highly poisonous substance.
The incident occurred during a routine afternoon training session on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising urgent concerns about the safety of the environment in which these young athletes train.
According to eyewitnesses, the unidentified player estimated to be around 12 or 13 years old suddenly collapsed moments after complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath.
Coaches and team officials immediately rushed to his aid, administering first response care before emergency services arrived.
Paramedics reportedly observed signs of severe respiratory distress and suspected chemical inhalation as the possible cause.
The player was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in critical but stable condition under close observation.
Medical professionals have not yet publicly confirmed the exact nature of the substance inhaled but indicated it may be a highly toxic airborne chemical, possibly present near the training grounds. A full toxicological analysis is underway.
Local law enforcement and health officials have cordoned off the practice area and launched an urgent investigation.
The training facility, located in a semi-industrial area on the outskirts of town, is now being examined for potential contamination.
Initial reports suggest the presence of strong chemical odors in the area shortly before the incident, prompting fears that an illegal dumping or accidental leak may have occurred nearby.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Coach Raymond Ellis, visibly shaken.
“These kids come here to play, to grow, and to dream. We never imagined something like this could happen in a place meant to be safe.”
Parents and community members gathered near the facility on Sunday evening, some voicing anger over the location of the field and the apparent lack of environmental monitoring.
“There have been strange smells here for weeks,” said one parent. “We raised concerns before, but nothing was done. Now a child is fighting for his life.”
The Double R Youth Football League, known for its dedication to developing local talent, has suspended all practices and games until further notice.
In a statement released late Sunday, league officials expressed deep concern and pledged full cooperation with authorities to determine the cause and ensure the safety of all players.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the young athlete and his family,” the statement read.
“We are committed to supporting them through this time and taking whatever steps are necessary to protect our youth moving forward.”
As the investigation continues, local environmental agencies have been called in to conduct air and soil testing in and around the training ground.
Community leaders are also calling for a broader review of sports facilities in the region, especially those near industrial zones.
The identity of the player has not been released out of respect for the family’s privacy, but support has poured in from across the community, with many expressing hope for a full recovery and demanding answers to prevent future tragedies.
