$2.2 million grant set to help Georgia Southern researchers fight opioid epidemic

To combat the opioid epidemic, Georgia Southern researchers will receive a $2.2 million grant.

WTOC, Statesboro, Ga. Researchers from Georgia Southern will assist detainees

who are released from prisons throughout our region over the course of the next two years. Georgia Southern

University academics will use a new $2.2 million grant from the state of Georgia to

combat the opioid epidemic in nearby counties. To combat the opioid crisis in

tandem with law enforcement, researchers at Georgia Southern’s Health

Logistics and Analytics have started a two-year project. As soon as inmates

leave the jail, they want to provide them with resources and tools.

This means that they will be equipped with things like Narcan, rehab facilities, job trainings, and counseling.

They say that every jail facility across the state will have the opportunity to join this program.

However, they say that they mostly want to target jails in rural areas where the opioid crisis tends to be more rampant.

“Working with jails and detainees in the past has really touched our hearts at least for myself and I just love this

population. I would love to provide them with the opportunity to better

themselves once they are released. There’s a lot of people once they are released they want a better life, they

want to go out and make money, get a job, and do better for themselves,” said

IHLA Business Coordinator, Katherine Stewart.
