“I am so sorry to all my teammates, coaches, and UCF fans for making this decision, but after much reflection, I’ve realized I have no other option,” Rizk stated in a heartfelt message posted on social media. “Due to unforeseen personal circumstances that have affected my mental and physical health, I must step away from the game I love. This decision has not been easy, and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but it’s what’s best for me right now.”
Rizk’s decision comes as a shock to many, given his promising performances as the starting quarterback for UCF this season. The young signal-caller had gained attention for his strong arm and leadership on the field, helping the Knights stay competitive throughout the season. However, despite his on-field success, Rizk admitted that the pressures of being a college athlete, combined with personal struggles, have taken a significant toll on him.
“I’ve been battling with anxiety and stress for a while now, and it’s affected more than just my football performance,” Rizk continued. “The pressure to perform at a high level while balancing the demands of school and life off the field became overwhelming. I know this decision might disappoint many, but I have to prioritize my mental and emotional well-being. I’m thankful for the support I’ve received from my teammates, coaches, and the UCF community, but I need to focus on healing and moving forward.”
The news of Rizk’s departure comes at a crucial time for the UCF football program, as the team has been striving to make a push for a bowl game this season. Rizk’s absence leaves the Knights with a significant hole at quarterback, but UCF Head Coach Gus Malzahn has expressed his full support for the young quarterback, acknowledging the importance of mental health in athletics.
“We support Dylan’s decision and his need to take care of himself,” Malzahn said in a statement. “His well-being is the most important thing, and we will be here for him every step of the way. We understand that athletes face pressures that go beyond the game, and we fully support Dylan in focusing on his health.”
While Rizk’s time at UCF has been cut short, his decision shines a light on the growing importance of mental health awareness in sports. It sends a powerful message to athletes everywhere that taking care of one’s mental and emotional health should always come first. As Rizk moves forward, UCF fans and teammates will continue to support him in whatever comes next, hoping that this difficult decision leads to a healthier and brighter future for the young quarterback.
