The University of Missouri’s football program has faced several tragic incidents involving its players over the years. One of the most heart-wrenching events was the death of Aaron O’Neal, a 19-year-old linebacker who collapsed during a voluntary workout on July 12, 2005. O’Neal’s passing was attributed to complications related to the sickle cell trait, a hereditary condition that can lead to severe health issues during intense physical exertion. In 2009, the university reached a $2 million settlement with O’Neal’s family and established an annual endowed scholarship in his honor.
In June 2015, defensive lineman Harold Brantley was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in significant injuries, including fractures to his ribs and tibia, as well as ligament damage in his knee. Although his injuries were severe, Brantley survived the accident and began a challenging recovery process.
Later that year, in September 2015, four Missouri football players, including standout freshman defensive lineman Terry Beckner Jr., were involved in a car accident near the university’s campus. Fortunately, all four players sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Beckner and another player were treated at the scene, while two others were transported to University Hospital as a precaution.
These incidents have profoundly impacted the Mizzou Tigers community, serving as somber reminders of the challenges and risks associated with collegiate athletics. The resilience and determination demonstrated by the players in their recoveries have been sources of inspiration for teammates and fans alike.
