He scored the game-winning goal last week in their MTN8 semi-final first leg victory over the formidable Mamelodi Sundowns, and he played a crucial role in their victory in the weekend’s return leg in Durban.

Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana, was also persuaded to give Basadien an international call-up due to his performance for Stellenbosch.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to Stellenbosch, where he inked a new long-term contract earlier this year, in response to the Kaizer Chiefs speculations at the Bafana camp.

Speaking about the rumours that Kaizer Chiefs were interested in hiring him, Basadien stated, “I control what I can control,” as reported by iDiskiTimes.

“Obviously, I’m playing for Stellenbosch under contract. I can only consistently deliver strong performances every week. I don’t care what the media says; I’m there to work.

“Obviously, it’s encouraging that a team like Chiefs is considering you, but my focus has been on Stellenbosch and my contract there, so I just need to keep putting in good performances every week.”

The 27-year-old left back acknowledged being called up for the first time, saying, “Obviously, it’s an honour and privilege to represent my country.”

“As a football player, you always want to play for your nation. Luckily, the coach chose me after I turned in some strong, steady performances.

“And now all I have to do is seize the opportunity and make the most of it.”
