The most talked-about story this week has been Chiefs’ Sporting Director Mr. Motaung Jr.’s open confession of interest in Oswin Appollis. Appollis has become the focus of a protracted transfer saga after scoring twice for Bafana in their most recent 3-2 victory over South Sudan. The aim is Appollis. If the Amakhosi supporters fail to make a move for the gifted 23-year-old Polokwane City player, they would be crushed. He’s highly sought after. It would be a statement to capture him. But losing out on his signature would be embarrassing.

According to an informant who spoke to SoccerLaduma, “Polokwane City look set to lose this most prized possession [Appollis], with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs believed to be interested.”

He continued, “It is believed that the Buccaneers have increased their pursuit of the player and may be able to sign the enterprising attacker ahead of their competitors.”

Why the high price?

Iqraam Rayners, Khanyisa Mayo, and Elias Mokwana are among more South African attackers who have made significant moves in the Betway Premiership or elsewhere. Mokwana paid €370k (R7.2 million) to Esperance, Rayners transferred to Sundowns for an undisclosed amount (despite the fact that his estimated transfer value is now R35 million, indicating Sundowns’ dominance in the market), and Mayo joined Belouizdad in Algeria for €750k (R14.5 million). As of right now, transfermarkt values Mayo at twice what Cape Town City paid for the striker. Appollis might reasonably and readily command a higher price than the other three.
