Huff does not have strong Mississippi ties besides one season as an assistant coach at Mississippi State in 2018. He was also an assistant at Alabama in 2019 and 2020 under legendary coach Nick Saban.
Huff is from Maryland and played at Hampton. Some of his other coaching stops include Tennessee State, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Western Michigan, Penn State and one season in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills

Southern Miss football announced Sunday it has hired Marshall’s Charles Huff as its next coach.
Huff has been the coach at Marshall for the last four seasons and won the Sun Belt championship at Louisiana 31-3 on Saturday.
He replaces Will Hall, who was fired on Oct. 20 in the middle of his fourth season. Reed Stringer served as the interim coach for the final five games of the season. The Golden Eagles went 1-11.
“As we started this search, we were focused on finding a dynamic leader who could get our program back to competing for championships,” athletics director Jeremy McClain said in a school release. “Charles Huff has proven that he is a winner who can build a championship culture within the Sun Belt. We look forward to supporting him in our journey To The Top.”

Huff, 41, was paid $755,000 annually at Marshall, though his contract was set to expire on Jan. 31, 2025, according to the document obtained by USA TODAY.
He is the 23rd head coach in Southern Miss program history.
