Breaking News: UTSA football head coach Jeffrey Michael Traylor named Owen McCown and two other incredible players to depart the team as he plans on restructuring

In a significant development for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners football program, head coach Jeffrey Michael Traylor has announced the departure of quarterback Owen McCown and two other key players as part of a strategic team restructuring.

Owen McCown, a redshirt sophomore from Rusk, Texas, transferred to UTSA from Colorado and made notable contributions during his tenure. In the 2023 season, he played in seven games, completing 43 of 58 passes for 442 yards and four touchdowns, boasting a .741 completion percentage. He also rushed for 51 yards. McCown’s standout performance came in the Frisco Bowl, where he led the Roadrunners to their first-ever bowl victory, completing 22 of 31 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-17 win over Marshall.

In the 2024 season, McCown continued to impress, setting a school record by throwing for 434 yards in a narrow 46-45

loss to Tulsa. Despite his individual achievements, the team faced challenges,

and Coach Traylor has decided to make significant changes to the roster.

The identities of the other two departing players have not been officially

disclosed. However, these departures are part of Coach Traylor’s broader strategy

to restructure the team, aiming to enhance overall performance and

competitiveness in the upcoming seasons.

Coach Traylor, known for his commitment to building a resilient and

competitive program, expressed gratitude for the contributions of

McCown and the other departing players. He emphasized that such decisions,

while difficult, are made in the best interest of the team’s future success.

As the Roadrunners prepare for the next season, the focus will be on recruiting

new talent and developing existing players to fill the void left by these

departures. The coaching staff is expected to actively engage in scouting

and training to ensure the team remains competitive in the conference.

Fans and stakeholders will be keenly observing how these changes impact the

team’s dynamics and performance in the forthcoming season. The Roadrunners’

schedule for the next season includes hosting Kennesaw State on August 31,

marking the beginning of a new chapter for the restructured team.

In the meantime, McCown’s future endeavors will be followed with interest,

given his impressive track record and potential to make significant

contributions wherever he continues his football career.

This restructuring marks a pivotal moment for UTSA football, reflecting Coach Traylor’s strategic vision and

commitment to elevating the program’s stature in collegiate football.
